a. If a board position is not currently filled, you can volunteer to take that seat uncontested.
b. If a position is currently filled, reach out to the current board member to learn more about the role and offer your time. You will need to wait for the next election for your opportunity to fill that position as a Board Member, but we are always looking for people who can learn the ropes and fill in when the work grows bigger than the Board’s capacity!
Attend the PTA meeting on voting day, typically in April or May, for the following school year’s Board Member positions.
Vote in the election at the PTA meeting.
You may run for re-election to the same position once (serving no more than 2 terms on any one position). You may serve as a Board Member as many times as you like provided you are not in any one position for longer than 2 years total.

FAQ
-
Voting takes place during a PTA meeting at the end of the year. If the position is uncontested then the person will win by default. If there are 2 or more people running for a position you will vote by show of hands at the PTA meeting where voting will take place. Watch for an announcement at the end of the school year about when voting will take place!
-
Attend the voting meeting. If there is more than one candidate for a position then they will have an opportunity to share their beliefs.
-
Speaking with the PTA member who currently holds the position can be a great way to get a sense of what the role entails and help you decide if it is something you are excited and willing to do.
A 1-3 sentence description of why you feel you would be a good fit can be valuable in the event that you are running against another interested parent but it is not mandatory to prepare in advance.
-
The position will remain unfilled until someone from the PTA community expresses interest, in which case the current Board can take a vote on having the person join uncontested partway through the year. In the meantime, the rest of the Board will work to take on the duties of the missing Board position.
-
The current Board Members and, if possible, the last person to hold the position will do their best to bring you up to speed, give you access to relevant documents and materials, and in general make you feel that you are part of the team! There are no added courses to sit through or formal training documents to read; it is a train-as-you-go, Google-the-rest role!

We understand this sometimes happens. Discussing with the Board about what the right level of commitment is, either a reduced role or stepping back entirely, would be the best next step.
